How to Change Facebook Messenger Notification Sound In-App
Open Messenger on your smartphone and tap on Profile pic > Notifications & Sounds. You will then tap on Notification sound here to change the message tone and the Ringtone option to change the calling tune.
Here’s the thing. Messenger offers no way to select custom notification sounds. However, what it does is pull system notification sounds. We know from experience that no two smartphones are alike and each manufacturer likes to ship phones with their own customized sounds. That’s why, when you open the list, you will see different sound files than what I am seeing on my Mi phone.
Notification sounds will, therefore, vary from device to device. There is no way to select a sound file that you downloaded from the web here. Sad as it is, that’s the way it is. There is no way to select a different notification sound on Messenger for Android for group messages either. Messenger is not very flexible when it comes to notifications, eh? This goes for both messages and call alert tones. What you can do is disable the notifications under the In-app sound option. That will disable the sound when you have the app open on your phone.
Another option is Do Not Disturb. That will disable all Messenger sound notifications even when the app is not open or the phone is locked.
How to Change Messenger Notification Sound Permanently from Settings
There are many users who are complaining about how the Messenger app is changing the notification sound automatically on their phones. Most of these users say that a file name ‘2131755087’ is set as the default tone even though they don’t have this file installed. Curious. The incident is happening with Android users only however, it is visible across a number of smartphone manufacturers with different OEMs. I found a simple solution to resolve this error for good. Forget the Messenger app. Open Android Settings and go to Notifications & status bar > App notifications > Messenger.
You can now customize different notification sounds for different types of Messenger messages. Tap on Chat and calls and then Ringtone to choose a tone when you receive a message or a call.
You can also change the notification sounds for group chat messages and mentions. This setting is not available even in the Messenger app, as we previously discussed. In fact, there is a separate notification sound setting for stories, calls in progress, location sharing, and chat heads. Just tap to open each setting and then select the Ringtone option to choose your favorite sound. Tapping on the sound will play it once, so you can judge whether or not you like it. Other options include the ability to control whether or not you want to see notifications, hear any sound or just mute it, feel the vibration, and LED light. These additional options are just icing on the cake, in my opinion. That means even if the app is acting funny and changes the notification file randomly, you shouldn’t have to worry about a thing. Just set it and forget it.

There are two ways to change the Messenger notification sound, as you read above. One is to do it from in-app which is very limited and not working for all users. The way is much better which works from the Android settings area. As always, if you have found another way to do it, share it with us in the comments below.
